We found another house in a small town nearby that suits our needs. We need to size down and get a change of scene. We have done a lot to fix up this house and property since we moved in in 2000, all done with love and the idea that we would be here forever, but I guess you should never say forever. Here are a few pictures that we have taken and some other posts and older posts that show our home as it has evolved and is today. It is 25 acres with pond and pasture fenced.

It has lots of woods and a lovely yard with lots of native foliage and trees. Apple trees and a couple of peach trees, blueberries and some cherry bushes. The house is a typical 3 bedroom ranch that has a livingroom, family room and 2 full baths. We put in new kitchen cabinets from Kraft Maid in 2010 with glass tile backplash,gas range and new fridge. It also has two cute screened porches for country relaxing. We have an extra "cottage" with a bathroom, bedroom and storage room, but not a kitchen. There is also two other "cottages" that are fixed as bedrooms. We have a 24 foot above ground pool with a deck that is lots of fun for the kids. We have a pond and a barn and several other storage outbuildings. It is in the country on a very quiet country road. Perfect for country living, self-sufficiency or growing some kind of crop, animals (we have two horses and chickens). It is surrounded by woods and very quiet out here. A peaceful secluded spot in McDowell County, NC. Now for some pictures that I have posted in just a random order. Don't forget to look at all the older posts on this blog to see other things about this home. Asking price is $287,700. or reasonable offer. She is a sweet and easy filly named Bella. I really wanted Lindsay to have a horse so she could have something to be responsible for and to love. It is working out fine so far. She loves Bella and Bella has taken to her. Lindsay had riding lessons a few years ago from Mr. Bill Queen, who lives down the road a ways. She did enjoy it and I knew that one day we would want to get a horse for her. It is amazing how she is recalling all the things she learned about the care and keeping of a horse. I love to see her tending to Bella and how Bella responds to her.

We purchased Bella from a fellow up in North Cove. Bella lived way up on the side of a mountain and I know she was happy with her owners, but the space she lived in was quite steep and no real flat pasture for her. She was so excited about her new place when she got here that she ran and ran and laid down and rolled. I could see that she was so happy to have a place to roam that was flat. She even likes her calf-mates that she shares her area with. We are planning on getting a donkey to put down at the pasture by the pond so she can have company.

Kelly loves taking care of her too and Briggs, who was not that thrilled about the thoughts of getting a horse has taken to her like a man takes to his dog. I have given up my Atkins shakes in order to buy feed for her and that is ok because she is so sweet and such a lovely horse.

Snow Forever-I Guess

The snow that fell at our home in NC, around Christmas is still hanging around. I can't believe all the snow I see as I drive down the roads, into town and around the countryside. It has been so cold that many yards still have a lot of snow left in the northern exposure or shady places. Some of the big piles of snow downtown are so large and packed down that I think they will be there until March. It has been so cold that our house has had a hard time staying warm, even with the wood stove. We have lived here for 31 years and have never had snow last this long. That is ok though. I like to see snow in the winter since it reminds me of my childhood in Michigan. That is one reason I wanted to move to NC from Florida many years ago. As long as you can stay reasonably warm and get around you are ok. So far I have not had that "little feeling" that I wanted Spring to come, but in a few weeks I am sure I will.

Cornbread, Yellow or White Cornmeal?

When I grew up, my mom made cornbread once in a while for dinner. Now, it was not served with meat or soup or any main dish. It was the main dish. She served it with butter and syrup on top. That, with a big glass or milk made a pretty good meal. No, we are not originally from the South where cornbread was a main fixin'. We were from Michigan. Now, my mom always used yellow cornmeal for her cornbread and it was a little sweet like Jiffy cornbread mix is today. After I married my southern husband, I more often ate cornbread made by his mom. She always made it with a cornmeal mix that had white cornmeal in it. She never put sugar in it so it was not sweet. Sometimes she put chitlins in it. What are chitlins? I think it is some part of a pig. Not my favorite kind of cornbread. On Sunday afternoon, I decided to make some cornbread out of a mix I got with a coupon. It was Martha White cornbread mix and it was white, like my mother-in-law's. It ended up tasting just like hers too. Now she was a great cook, but I will confess that even today, I like my mom's yellow and sweet cornbread best.

Deck to Screened Porch

Well, if you do not know, my husband is a workaholic. He never stops with the projects and work around our home. When we moved into our home in 2000, he quickly got busy and built a deck on the back. We have enjoyed it, of course. But, he has been encouraging me to let him put a roof over it. I fought the idea for long time because I kind of like the deck. The sun shines directly on the deck in the morning so it does get very hot but he kept on encouraging me to let him do it and when he finally said he would make it a screened porch, I decided it would be nice.
He has been working on it ever since.

First he put on the roof, then the side supports, painting, screening and the new screen door we got at a special price. All in all it had not cost too much as Briggs is good at collecting building material here and there and had some of the supplies.

I debated as to whether I would decorate it in a "beachy" theme or a "rusic mountain porch" look. I opted for the rustic look because we already have a side porch that is white with a 1950's theme. I have 3 antique wicker chairs that my cousin from Michigan gave me this year and I plan to paint them a green instead of the usual white. I think I will be looking for rustic little decorations to add to the decor. I am painting the wood deck floor brown and we have already stained the rest of the porch a cedar brown.

It is almost done except for some finishing touches so I will post pictures of the final product when we are through. For now I am posting pictures I have taken during the building process.
Briggs has done an excellent job and I am thankful that he is so willing to take the time to work so hard to improve our home.

Finished At Last-Probably Not!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnO36pp4iDI/AAAAAAAAA8g/PzZ9vJmNikI/s320/DSC04588_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364833799370213426" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnO3sFnk07I/AAAAAAAAA8Y/qnoNwBACAR8/s320/DSC04589_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364833549178688434" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnO3sO-wqtI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/sIiUrYwjx3w/s320/DSC04591_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364833551691852498" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnO3r_XQ47I/AAAAAAAAA8I/83ppGGHqWuQ/s320/DSC04178_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364833547499660210" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnO3rhGBwII/AAAAAAAAA8A/Ns8LztKc1Ng/s320/DSC04177_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364833539374301314" />
It took quite a few weeks, but we finally finished our living room-kitchen makeover. Now the two rooms are one and it makes such a difference in the spaciousness of our home. We can see what is going on in the kitchen or living room from any given spot. We have more room to sit and be with each other. We put down a great new floor in the kitchen that I would recommend to anyone interested in changing their floor. It is a product by Armstrong called Allure. It was easy to put down and cleans up so well. It looks like real tile without the coldness and hardness of tile. I have repainted the kitchen and changed some of the decorating elements. Our living room is yellow and the kitchen is a light turquoise or aqua, with accents of both colors in each room. I am tending toward a little cottage look in the kitchen with a retro twist. I love the 40's 50's look and so I am incorporating a little of that with hints of red with the yellow and aqua, while keeping it "cottagey" too.

Fixing Up

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnOx95T8PWI/AAAAAAAAA74/MZfSVTLOq14/s320/DSC03795_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364827258042989922" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 120px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnOx9f-qCKI/AAAAAAAAA7w/gom7TE_gB9Q/s320/DSC03798_resize_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364827251242829986" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnOx9FyS_rI/AAAAAAAAA7o/Hf_4ROlljz8/s320/DSC03840_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364827244211666610" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnOx9N_KnTI/AAAAAAAAA7g/a9pcMI8HI0g/s320/DSC03841_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364827246413126962" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SnOx87GrkmI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/c70thacmjvQ/s320/DSC03845_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364827241344373346" />
Fixing up seems to be the word around our place for the past few months. I seems the projects are never done. And when we finish one we think up another. Our biggest project for the summer was opening up the kitchen and living room wall to make a "great room". We have a wood stove in the living room that only heat that room in the winter so we wanted to be able to take better advantage of the cozy wood heat and heat the kitchen too. It started as just a thought and then we began to think seriously about it. All of a sudden one day, Briggs said he was going to start tearing the wall down the next day. It scared me a little, but I went along with it and for the next month or so we worked on creating a larger space for our family to enjoy. It really makes a big difference in the spacial feeling of our home. I like it a lot. Now when we have family gatherings we can all be together. It should also make for cozier winter nights and days as the stove will now heat the two big rooms instead of only one.

Mommy's Flowers

Being here in Florida visiting my mom is a time that is special to me. She is 86 now. She still likes the simple things that seem to cheer her up. I try to think of those things and help her to have them around our talk to her about them. One thing she likes a lot is roses. She has a Don Juan rose bush in her front yard and she loves to have someone bring one in and put it in a little vase for her to enjoy. She comments on it often. When I was a child in Michigan, my mom grew a lot of roses in our backyard. June is her birth month and roses are the flower for June. They remind me of her whenever I see them. She bought me a Don Juan rose too, and I have it growing at my front door in North Carolina. Joanne has one in her yard too. The other day I brought one in and she has really enjoyed it every day.
This picture is her rose and a hibiscus from the yard that I put by a picture of my mom and her mom, my Grandma Jennie, and my mom's father. I have a pair that has a nest in a bluebird house in my back yard. Last night I was watching the "mommy" fly around and perch, and dive to the grass to find some food for her babies. She landed on the telephone wire out my kitchen window and I was able to get a pretty good picture of her. She is not as brightly colored as her husband, but she is still beautiful to me. The pictures here are of the male earlier this spring and the "mommy" last night.

A Little Lilly Tale

Day lillies were never my favorite flower, but the last few years I have grown to love their appearance here in North Carolina, around the month of June. I even have a nice little row growing in my yard, thanks to the previous owner of our home. If you ride through the countryside right now you will see them popping up and blooming in the most unusual places. It makes me wonder who took the time to plant them where they are. Yesterday I was driving past a pasture that had a creek off in the distance and I noticed them growing in various spots along the creek. I do not think they grow wild because they are a bulb, but they are everywhere around my little neck of the woods, none-the-less.

Old Chair Made New! A few months ago I ran across this idea in Country Home. When I saw it, I said, "I have a chair just like that." It was way down in the barn. The chair was my mother-in-laws chair from Bryant Furniture which she bought way back in the 6o's from Mr. Bryant, who made early American furniture in Holly Hill, Florida. Having just redone our kitchen in shades of turquoise blue, I decided to try it on this chair and put it at our computer desk. Here you see the progression from original finish to primer to finished chair. It turned out really well, don't you think? And now we are using a pleasant memory from the past.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ourfarmhome.blogspot.com/2009/06/i-am-always-getting-home-ideas-from.html' title='Old Chair Made New! I have not compared the price to buying my Gain liquid, but someone told me it comes out to a penny a load. It is easy to do and the ingredients are tried and true laundry helpers from years past- Borax, washing soda, and Fels-Naptha laundry bar soap. My picture shows the amount I got when I was done. Here is the recipe:
1/3 bar Fels-Naptha (I used 1/2 bar)
1/2 Cup Arm and Hammer washing soda
1/2 Cup Borax

(You can use any bar soap if you wish but I think this one is best. Some grocers carry it and some hardware stores can get it. Just ask. Octagon is another old laundry bar that can be used too.)

You need a small bucket about 2 gallon size.

Grate the Fels-Naptha into a pan and add 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil and dissolve completely. Add the washing soda and borax and stir until all dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket and add soap mixture as you stir it well. Add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir again. I poured it into my old laundry soap containers and saved the rest in the bucket until I need it. You have to shake the laundry soap bottle before each use because the soap turns to a gel. Use 1/2 cup per load. It is low suds soap so do not expect a lot of suds. I have heard that you can add some oil scents to it if you want a scented soap.

I am keeping the ingredients for this soap in my food storage supply for use someday if we need it.

Bookcase Finished, Almost!

Here is my bookcase that I painted. With our little remodel of putting an opening between the living room and kitchen, I have several projects that I am working on to go along with the redecorating. Number 1, I am painting an expensive book shelf white to match the kitchen cabinets and will put it next to the computer. Being a collector of too much stuff and sentimental besides, I acquire or keep things out of sentimentality. This being the case I needed more space to display some of Aunt Alice's dishes. (She passed away at almost 97 a few weeks ago) I have a before picture here and when I am finished I will post an after picture. The other project is two little oval bird prints I bought at a thrift shop the other day for $5. Being in love with cottage style, I thought they might look good in our kitchen that is painted a light seafoam color. The frames as you can see here are gold and plastic, but they had a lovely embossed design and I just knew they would paint up nicely and look good on the wall. Here is before picture and I will show the after in a day or so. I love to get ideas from other "cottage" blogs and use all my little "sentimentals" to give our home that "cottage" feel.

"Oh, Sweet Spring"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SfzksTvN_hI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/4-N_AWaakU4/s320/DSC03535_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331387508763524626" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SfzkYCinX1I/AAAAAAAAA0I/PcEYP93boPM/s320/DSC03873_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331387160549875538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/SfzkDgtLRtI/AAAAAAAAA0A/45t5lp5BhEM/s320/DSC03529_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331386807869982418" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/Sfzj7K5kvuI/AAAAAAAAAz4/9E0cL8bYYVA/s320/DSC03934_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331386664577449698" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qI4sMpDa8T0/Sfzjw-IQ4xI/AAAAAAAAAzw/TxgKRkcNieo/s320/DSC03522_resize.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331386489350710034" />
Yes, I have to say that Spring is my favorite time of the year. I love Fall too, but Spring is the best. I think that it is the season I remember the most from my childhood in Southern Michigan. I remember all the blossoms, and new spring flowers that bloomed around my home on Lake Michigan. My Mom and Grandma's yard was full of flower after flower, blooming in God's sequence as the weather warmed itself from the cool month of February. It is much like that here in Western North Carolina, where we live now. So many of the flowers and trees that are blooming right now are the ones I fondly remember from my childhood. Flowers like the jonquil, forsythia, spirea, lilac and many others have been blooming here the last month or so. I have many of these in my own yard and enjoy their sweet beauty as they bloom for me. I also have some little flowers I have planted like pansies, that show their little faces to the sun until the really warm weather makes them bow their heads and wither away. If the spring green of the tree leaves and grass would stay all summer, I would be so pleased. But, a last, they will soon turn to their summer green which is a darker color. Spring disappears so quickly after it has come. Every now and then, I just have to take a room and redo it. It has to be done on a budget but a little paint and fabric can really make a difference and help you feel renewed. In the past month, I have been redoing my bedroom from a Martha Stewart green, from the year 2000, to light blue walls with lots of blue accessories. I bought a blue chenille bedspread from "A County Place", some curtain panels with big blue cabbage roses from "Domestications", a Sure-fit chair slipcover in a light taupe to cover my wingback chair, and a blue rag rug ($19.99) that just popped up at "Freds, of all places, one day. These were the major purchases. I like the way it turned out and it is amazing to me how you can start to redo a room and little things you have around the house seem to fit into your scheme. So here is the finished product, which we are enjoying. The china pincushion doll is something my mom gave me many years ago. She tells me she bought it at a church bazaar when she was a girl in DeKalb, Illinois. I finally made a dress for the poor young woman this week and I think it turned out very pretty. Now she proudly resides on my dresser which I also refinished. It is cherry wood and was my mother-in-laws dresser. I have a collection of Florida plates surrounding my mirrored. We are originally from Florida and I have been collecting them for a few years.

Prelude to My Room Change

I have redecorated my bedroom after 9 years of living in our home. It was decorated when we first moved in and was in need of a new look. I give a little tease today with the above picture of my new rug. The last thing I need to do is make my little decorative pillows for some accent color. I am waiting for my fabric from JoAnn's Fabric to come. When it does I will post more pictures of my "new room".

A Little Snow-Big Flakes

Yesterday, Feb. 3, it started to snow in the afternoon. Not much but it came down really pretty in the night. We got more snow here in our "neck of the woods" than the rest of the county. The top picture is looking down our driveway to Rockhouse Road. The other picture is in the front yard and as you see there is a freezing flamingo there. I imagine we will get another snow or two before the winter is up. It is also spelled loofa, loofah, or lufa. A Couple of months ago I decided to plant them along the back of the deck. As you can see by the pictures they have grown by leaps and bounds. They are quite decorative and I have a few luffa growing which I hope to make into a sponge for the shower. The article below explains a little about them and I just thought it might be interesting to some of my "many" readers. If I am successful, I will be giving lufa sponges for Christmas gifts. Ha! Ha!

Loofah Article:

Quite a few people were interested in my recent harvest of Luffa shower sponges. I thought Id explain a bit more about the plant and the process of growing it. Luffa aegyptiaca Mill. or as it is commonly called, the Loofah, is a vegetable native to South America. It can be eaten when it is smaller. I have stir fried them but only up to a size of about 4 inches. After that they become tough like an over ripe squash. Left to fully mature each fruit produces an excellent sponge. Seeds for this plant are readily available through vegetable catalogs and you’ll only have to buy seeds your first year- one mature Luffa sponge will produce at least 30 seeds. Some will produce many more.
Frost kills the plant and it needs 4 to 5 months of growth to produce sponges. Here in North Carolina I can plant seeds directly in the ground near the date of the last frost and then harvest a modest number of sponges later in autumn. If I wanted a better yield or if I lived further north I would start them indoors several weeks, maybe even a month before the date of the last frost and transplant them outdoors after frost danger has passed. Planting them on the sunny, southern side of your property will help. They are natural climbers and are happiest running up the sides of a trellis or even the outer walls of your home. I sprinkle a few seeds near, but not in front of, one of my south facing gutter downspouts. When the plant sprouts it climbs up the downspout and along my gutters. It doesn’t impede the flow of water and in the fall when the plant dies I easily pull it off of my home. The large Luffa leaves help to shade the hottest side of my house in the summer. I am certain they could be grown just as well on a large trellis. They can get quite long. Ive grown vines that exceeded 15 feet in length.
Sometimes Luffas left to fully mature and turn brown or Luffas that ripen lying on the ground will have brown splotches of color throughout the sponge. For some people this isn’t a problem. Others however do not like bathing with something that is several different shades of rust. After I remove the outer skin and squeeze out the pulp and seeds from inside the Luffa, I often soak them in a weak solution of bleach and warm water for about 5 minutes. This is especially true of the Luffa sponges I give as gifts. The process usually lightens the color and gets rid of dark brown spots. After doing so I let them dry thoroughly by hanging them up or placing them on a drying rack. It is also possible to dye the Luffas if you think you’d like bathing with a pink sponge.
I highly suggest you try growing Luffa sponges; even those of you in Northern climates with shorter growing seasons. Each morning as I start my day, I am reminded of my commitment to becoming more self-sufficient when I shower using a sponge I grew myself.

Bounty From the Garden

You would never know that we had a drought for the first part of the summer by the abundance of vegetables we have harvested from our garden. I think that we have had more tomatoes, corn and beans this year than any year that I can remember. The apples and peaches were bumper crops too.

Our garden owes its success to the man of the house, Poppy Briggs. He planed, plowed, planted and with patience, waited for the crops to grow. Having doubts at first, because of the lack of rain early on, he continued to weed and watch over the two gardens he was working with. Adam and Robbie were so kind to give him a gas water pump for his garden down by the pond and it saved the day down there. We are reaping a lot of goodness from that garden along with the garden by the house. No farmer could be more diligent in his efforts than Poppy to bring these crops in and prepared for our food storage pantry. I think that I am now looking forward to the day he says, "this is the last of the tomatoes and beans, Carol". I am so thankful, but there comes a time when you want to move on to other projects. We have been truly blessed and are grateful for the bounteous food that we have been able to grow this summer.

Maybe we can try a winter garden!

A Change of Color

Every now and then a person has to make a change in their surroundings. It seems that I do it more often than most. My family will tell you that, but usually my changes are not expensive and entail mostly elbow grease. Just before school was out, I had a very stong desire to do away with the pink I had in my livingroom and hallway since we moved in. It was a lovelyl color for the years we had it, but I suddenly had the urge to change and make our home more cheerful. I chose the color of yellow. A pale yellow. After two gallons of paint and several quarts of white trim paint, I was able to get the livingroom and hallway painted and feeling much more cheerful and clean. We have a wood stove insert, so there was a slight soot build up on the pink. It is suprising how happy a little change like that can make you feel and how satisfied and accomplished you think you are. Lots of the ususal decorations and furniture took on a different look with the yellow. I ended up using some left over aqua blue paint from the bathroom for some trim on a cabinet and book case. I also painted the inside of the front door aqua and the corner dish cupboard and book case white. I enjoy going into that room now and reading the scriptures in the morning. I am confessing to you that I do like to look around and admire my handiwork too. Of course, all things come from the Lord and I give him credit for helping me with the inspiration to make this change.

Spring at Our Farm

I do not want our springtime to disappear before I muse a little on how much I love the Spring.
It is my favorite season of all. This spring in North Carolina has been a beautiful one. I think the flowers and trees that bloom here in our yard were the prettiest they have been in a few years. The temperature has been nice for a long time now and as June approaches, it has not even been hot yet.

As Briggs prepares our garden, I am working on the yard. I love to plant flowers and lay mulch, trim bushes and mow the lawn. My love of flowers and gardening comes from my Grandma Jennie and my Mommy. When I was growing up in Michigan, they always had lots of flowers and seemed to love working in their yards. As I work in the garden or walk around the yard I am reminded of those memories I have of them. I love the daffodils that grew in abundance down at my Grandma Jennie's yard. When I close my eyes and smell the scent of my new lilac bush it takes me back to those days. I have planted 4 lillacs in our yard so I can keep that memory alive. When I look at my roses blooming, I am reminded of all the roses my mother so lovingly tended in our yard on Hagar Shore Road near Lake Michigan. A few years ago, I planted a rose by the front porch called Don Juan. Mommy gave it to me and she and Joanne have one too. It will always remind me of her.

Unlike last year, the apple and peach trees bloomed without frost and were beautiful, along with the redbuds. We have various other bushes and flowers that have one by one, brought joy and memories to me as I watched them bloom this spring. Someday I hope that my children and grandchildren will be able to visit our yard and have a loving memory of Grammy Carol in their memories. Passing these memories on to our children is part of family love and connection. This year I am noticing that several of our children have been acting a little like their mom and dad. Adam and Robbie both are doing vegetable gardens like their dad always did and Jennie is getting really involved in her birds like mom. I notice that Aimee works hard in her yard and Kristen is not afraid to mow her yard, like mom. All of them seem to take pride in the creations that our Heavenly Father has given to us to enjoy and use and that is the bottom line, I guess. While I was away in Florida, visiting my mother, my son and husband tore out our old bathtub and started on the tiling of the new walk-in shower. Adam is in the tiling business and does a wonderful job. It is fresh and pretty and even has a rainshower shower head. I painted the walls a light robin's egg blue to match the trim tile in the shower. I have collected some retro cups and plates from garage sales and put them on a white shelf. For now, we have done nothing with the sink and countertop but just for a tempoary fix, I painted the old formica black, along with an old dresser. I will do something better later, but it turned our quite good. It is cheerful and bright and I love the shower. Thanks Adam and Dad!

Our Farm

ave b
We heen blessed with a wonderful place to live. A few years ago, we were able to buy 24 acres with a pond and "little brick rancher" house. The house was not my dream home. It is just a typical brick ranch built in the 70's. But, the land sold us on the place with its acreage and big field down through the woods with a nice size pond. Since then we have done a lot with it and have made the house our own too. This blog is a kind of picture book of "Our Farm". "Our Farm" was the name of my Uncle Fred's blueberry farm in Michigan when I was growing up in the 50's. I have fond memories of it and so have dubbed our place with that name too.
